Decarbonization and Emission Reduction Are Essential to Remaining Competitive

The Basque Steel Cluster Association brings together companies from across the entire steel industry value chain and works in key areas such as internationalization, sustainable development, technological innovation, and talent training.

The Basque Steel Sector Faces a Pivotal Moment for Its Future. At SIDEREX, we see the steel industry at a turning point. “The sector is facing major challenges such as global overcapacity, protectionism, high energy costs, and the emergence of new technologies, which are forcing companies to adapt in order to remain competitive,” says Asier San Millán, Director of SIDEREX.

“Our main objective is to promote cooperation and synergies among companies in the different areas we represent to increase their competitiveness,” San Millán highlights. The association focuses on key areas such as internationalization, sustainable development, technological innovation, and talent training. It brings together companies across the entire steel value chain—from steel producers and processors to engineering firms and manufacturers of capital goods and components.

Attracting Young Talent: A Key Challenge

One of the main challenges facing the sector is attracting young talent. “We are part of an industry that may not seem as appealing as other sectors,” San Millán acknowledges. To reverse this perception, SIDEREX has launched initiatives like Room4Steel, a steel-focused classroom developed in collaboration with the Bilbao School of Engineering (UPV/EHU).

“Room4Steel was created to address this issue by offering specific training in areas that companies have identified as essential,” explains San Millán. In addition to education, the program facilitates internships within companies and supports students in developing their Bachelor’s and Master’s theses through real-life projects. “Our goal is to retain talent, enhance our capabilities, and, above all, help young people enter the job market,” he adds.

Sustainability as a Priority

The future of the Basque steel industry is closely tied to digitalization, energy efficiency, and waste valorization. However, the greatest challenge is sustainability. “Decarbonization and emissions reduction have become unavoidable goals for staying competitive,” states San Millán.

In this regard, companies must adapt to increasingly demanding environmental regulations. “We’re facing a green legislative tsunami coming from various administrations, and being prepared is essential,” he points out. The Basque steel industry plays a vital role in sectors such as infrastructure, construction, and mobility, making it a key player in the transition toward a more sustainable model, San Millán concludes.
